While, for many, Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer season it has a much deeper meaning. From its beginnings as a way to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War, to its modern meaning – honoring all Americans who have died in wars, Memorial day is a way for us to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our Country.

Regardless of your feelings about any of the wars in which they have served, the men and women of our armed forces have always stood ready to lay down their own lives to protect our freedom. On this day, let us remember their gallant sacrifice. Let us also work for peace so that future generations do not have to bear the same costs as past ones have. We can all make a difference in our world, whether through our own actions or supporting the actions of others, to reduce poverty, increase justice, and to encourage understanding.

May all of these small efforts come together to make a big difference, and may the sacrifice of our fallen never be in vain. On this Memorial Day, that is our wish.
