While properly installed and functioning windows are essential for the protection and comfort of your home, claims of energy savings have been greatly exaggerated. In fact, the FTC recently settled charges against 5 window replacement companies that made exaggerated claims about the energy efficiency of their windows, and how much money consumers could save on their heating and cooling bills by having them installed.

The marketing materials of these companies promised energy savings of 35% to 50%, depending on the company, and offered cash-back guarantees on energy bills. Given the huge range of variables that can come into play in energy performance, the FTC voted to declare the claims deceptive and unscientific. The FTC and the Washington Attorney General reached a similar settlement with local company, Penguin Windows, which is now out of business.

If anyone tries to promise you savings from any upgrade to your home without performing this work, BEWARE!

This does not mean that you shouldn’t consider replacement windows. New windows, properly installed, can reduce noise and energy use (compared to older windows), can enhance the beauty of your home, and can help to protect it from the elements for years to come. If you are in the market for replacement windows, look for a company that:

  • Provides a thorough evaluation of your home
  • Does not make general guarantees about energy savings
  • Does not use high-pressure sales tactics, such as steep discounts for buying on the spot
  • Guarantees their workmanship
  • Uses AAMA certified installers
