When the compressor died on their 13-year-old air conditioner in the middle of the summer, the Weiler’s in Redmond, WA wanted AC fast! Faced with replacing the compressor in an aging air conditioning system, or installing a new one, the decided to replace the old one. Instead of replacing it with another air conditioner, they chose to install a Trane XL16i heat pump instead.
Unlike an air conditioner that only provides cooling in the summer, a heat pump uses heat-transfer to provide cooling in the summer AND highly efficient heating in the winter! Beyond this, the Trane XL16i has a 2-stage compressor that provides lower output on mild days, and full output when it is needed. This system combines excellent comfort, no matter what the conditions outside the home, with high efficiency to save energy.
A high efficiency indoor coil replaced their old AC coil. In order to accommodate the new coil, and improve airflow through the system (critical to ensure the Weiler’s comfort and efficient system operation), the coil was moved from the crawl space, and the ductwork in the crawl space was redesigned to improve airflow, rebuilt, sealed and insulated. The new coil was installed at the furnace, and the plenums were rebuilt to accommodate the new system design, improving airflow by replacing square-to-round transitions with aerodynamic ones, and sealing all of the plenums.
The Weiler’s home will benefit from improved year-round comfort, and lower energy bills with their new heating and cooling system. Congratulations to Lyle Gardner and Brandon Richer, our installation of the week winners for the week of August 20,2012 for a very thorough, clean and professional installation!
