Here it is, the season we’ve been waiting for all year! Summer has arrived in the Pacific Northwest and with it comes plenty of sunshine and higher temperatures. With hotter weather taking center stage, you may be running up your energy bills to keep cool air flowing in your home. While it’s important to be comfortable inside your home, wouldn’t it be great if you could be comfortable without increasing your carbon footprint? Here are a few energy-saving tips from BelRed:

  1. An up-to-date high-efficiency air conditioner can use about half the energy of older models. If your air conditioning system is more than 10 years old, we suggest you look into replacing it with a new model.
  2. Adjusting your thermostat to the highest comfortable temperature when it’s hot out is another great way to save energy this summer. Setting your thermostat even a few degrees higher than you normally do can lead to significant savings on electric bills. We recommend a minimum set point of 78 degrees Fahrenheit – every degree lower than 78 can raise your bill as much as 3 percent!
  3. Buy a programmable thermostat. If you spend most of your day outside of the house, you can set your thermostat to automatically shut off the A/C when you’re away.
  4. Ceiling fans, box fans and oscillating fans use very little electricity and circulate the air, which can help you feel cooler. Just remember to turn them off when you leave the room.
  5. Close your home’s blinds, shades and curtains to keep the sun out and the cool air in. Sunlight coming through windows can account for up to 40-percent of unwanted heat and can force the air conditioner to work two to three times harder, wasting a substantial amount of energy.
  6. HVAC systems should be checked regularly by a qualified contractor. Our inspectors will make sure your system is leak-free and operating as efficiently as possible.

If you’d like your A/C unit inspected, want to install a new thermostat or if your home’s heating and cooling system is in need of professional maintenance, we invite you to contact a licensed HVAC technician at BelRed today!
