Whether in our own homes or somewhere else, we have all probably experienced the stuffy feeling of damp, heavy or “dirty” air indoors. It’s certainly not a pleasant feeling and can even be harmful to our health and wellbeing.

According to US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) studies, levels for air pollutants may be up to five times higher indoors than outdoors. We thought we’d help you start to address some of the typical causes of poor indoor air quality. The series continues with part two, below:

1. Keep your air filters fresh. It’s something we talk about quite a bit on the blog here at BelRed, but it’s a point that can’t be overstated. Changing your air filter in your heating and cooling system can help keep your air quality inside your home as fresh as possible. Filters should typically be changed every 1-2 months, depending on the type your system requires. This is an easy fix that can do wonders for limiting dirt, dust and allergens from getting into the air.

2. Laundry isn’t solely for clothing. Linens and cloth in and around your home can commonly be traps for dirt and other particles that can quickly become part of your indoor air. Laundering any linens such as drapes, unused towels, etc. can help fight the collection of these particles, which will ultimately keep them out of the air.

3. Burn clean wood. If you do have a wood-burning fireplace inside your home, it can be a common problem for indoor air quality. Burning seasoned, dried and/or cured wood can do a lot for keeping harmful gases and smoke out of your home. It’s also imperative to have your chimney checked to ensure proper ventilation when burning wood.

4. Bring in an expert. As with all major home improvement projects, consulting with a professional and qualified contractor like BelRed will allow you to pinpoint issues at their core and allow you to make the right decisions for your budget and needs.
